Dr. Chih-Hung Liu has been an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at National Taiwan University since August 2022. He obtained his Bachelor degree in Computer Science in 2005 and his Ph.D. degree in Electronics Engineering in 2009 from National Taiwan University. After a one-year military service, he turned to Theoretical Computer Science and began his postdoctoral career. Since then, he has conducted postdoctoral research at Academia Sinica, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and the University of Bonn. From July 2016 to June 2022, he served as a senior researcher (Oberassistent) at ETH Zürich.

While doing research at ETH Zürich, in October 2020, Dr. Liu has completed his habilitation in Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The habilitation degree is the highest academic qualification in Germany, and allows one to directly apply a tenured professorship in Germany. In tradition, there was no tenure-track system of assistant, associate and full professorships in Germany. To be a professor, after getting a Ph.D. degree, one had to complete the habilitation, for which he/she needs to first do research and teach lectures in a university for several years, write a habilitation thesis, and passes a habilitation defense. Generally speaking, a Ph.D. degree requires the expertise in a single scientific topic, while a habilitation degree requires the expertise in a whole scientific field in the same depth as for a Ph.D. degree.

During his time in Europe, Dr. Chih-Hung Liu received the Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 2012. After returning to Taiwan, Dr. Liu was awarded the Yushan Young Fellow under the Yushan Fellow Program by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, in 2022.
